New segments of road offered opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs to buy land and start service stations, motels, and cafés. Entire towns, such as Moriarty, New Mexico, gravitated toward new segments of highway when they opened.

S. 44 Tourists and increasing numbers of migrants favored automobile travel on Route 66 because the route provided a direct and interesting trip to southern California that offered flexibility and lower costs. While auto tourism during the latter half of the “Roaring Twenties” laid the foundations for Route 66’s rise to fame, the refugees of the Great Depression helped make the highway a cultural icon. In the 1930s, Route 66 became the migratory route for hundreds of thousands of so-called Okies from the southern Great Plains during and after the four years of severe dust storms that became known as the Dust Bowl.
