Because the evidence is fairly strong that stratospheric aerosols, such as those induced by major volcanic eruptions, affect the stratospheric temperatures and the earth's energy budget, it is important to develop an aerosol climatology and a long-term monitoring plan. The data from Nimbus 7/SAM II and SAGE, along with correlative measurements from surface, aircraft, and balloon platforms, are being used to establish such a climate data base. Knowledge gained from the evaluation and analysis of these data will be used to establish observing requirements and plan for a long-term monitoring system.
