Because the evidence is fairly strong that stratospheric aerosols, such as those induced by major volcanic eruptions, affect the stratospheric temperatures and the earth's energy budget, it is important to develop an aerosol climatology and a long-term monitoring plan. The data from Nimbus 7/SAM II and SAGE, along with correlative measurements from surface, aircraft, and balloon platforms, are being used to establish such a climate data base. Knowledge gained from the evaluation and analysis of these data will be used to establish observing requirements and plan for a long-term monitoring system.

Radiation Balance The mean relative errors for the ten-day and monthly total amount of the radiation balance, calculated by Eq. (1) are less than 12. 7%. However, they are less than 7.
Another question is whether the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere is actually thinning globally because of the increased use of chemicals. The ozone hole recently discovered over the Antartic may be the precursor of a global trend. As a consequence of that, there may be a risk of human being exposed to such an increase in ultra-violet radiation that cases of skin cancer will rise dramatically in people living in high latitudes. Or, the "hole" might remain localized over the Antartic because it has a dynamical origin and is related to rather special meteorological conditions prelevant over the South Pole in October of each year.
