By 1960 the inroads of jet travel to Europe finally convinced USL that passenger travel aboard ships was largely obsolete and, rather than seeking a replacement, sought ways to dispose of the America. USL first obtained from the Maritime Administration* permission to reduce the number of money-losing voyages by the liner, whose last trips were in late 1963. The next year Greek shipowners bought the ship for operation in the cruise business. The career of the America under new names and under a shifting combination of foreign owners has been full of colorful episodes, and as of this writing it continues.
